The Vision Behind the Piece

Traditional folk art often carries a quiet nostalgia, preserving memories of street vendors and childhood play. Tò He—the centuries-old Vietnamese craft of sculpting toy figurines from rice dough—is one such heritage practice that defined neighborhood culture across Northern and Central Vietnam.

With Tò He, my intention was to bring this traditional street craft into conversation with modern youth culture. The artwork features a figure with short, contemporary hair wearing an urban bomber jacket, quietly holding a handcrafted rose-shaped tò he figurine. It is an exploration of cultural continuity—showing how heritage can exist naturally within a modern lifestyle.

Visual Nuance and Cultural Contrast

Tò He bridges traditional folk craft with contemporary aesthetic restraint:

  • Street Heritage & Modern Attire: The juxtaposition of the modern bomber jacket and short haircut against the delicate rose-shaped rice-dough figurine creates a fresh, authentic dialogue between present-day urban identity and traditional roots.

  • The Rose Figurine: Sculpted from simple rice paste and natural dyes, the rose-shaped figurine stands as a poetic, tactile symbol of street artistry, craftsmanship, and quiet affection.

  • Palette & Atmosphere: Neutral, muted background tones frame the figure, allowing the subtle colors of the jacket and the rose figurine to serve as warm, deliberate accents without overwhelming the composition.

 Collector’s Note:

Designed as a high-impact, character-driven statement piece, Tò He brings a striking contrast of raw urban energy and cultural depth to bold interiors. Its expressive composition and distinct contemporary edge make it a standout anchor for Industrial Lofts, Eclectic spaces, and Modern Urban interiors in creative studios, private galleries, or vibrant living environments.
